JCAHO
The Joint Commission on
Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) accredits Ephrata Community
Hospital and all of its services including Ephrata Community Home Care
and Ephrata Medical Equipment.
Accreditation is awarded for three
years. Joint Commission surveyors visit accredited health care organizations a
minimum of once every three years to evaluate standards compliance. Starting in
2006, all Joint Commission accreditation surveys will be unannounced.
Started in 1951, JCAHO seeks to
continuously improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public
through the provision of health care accreditation and related services that
support performance improvement in health care organizations. An independent,
not-for-profit organization, the Joint Commission is the nation's oldest and
largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care.
During the survey, surveyors select
patients randomly and use their medical records as a roadmap to evaluate
standards compliance. As surveyors trace a patient's experience in a health care
organization, they talk to the doctors, nurses, and other staff who interacted
with the patient. Surveyors also observe doctors and nurses providing care, and
often speak to the patients themselves.
Joint Commission accreditation does not begin and end
with the on-site survey. It is a continuous process. Ephrata Community
Hospital/Ephrata Medical Equipment constantly re-evaluates patient care and
safety standards compliance. If you have any unaddressed concerns about patient
care and safety, you are encouraged to contact Ted Gress, Operations Manager, at
733-0405, ext 109 or David Lerch, Director, 733-0405, ext 111. If your concerns
cannot be resolved through the Ephrata Medical Equipment, you can contact JCAHO
by either calling 1-800-994-6610 or emailing complaint@jcaho.org.
